Mercury contaminated fish consumption in Cachichira

Mercury is present in the Beni River due to legal and illegal gold mining, which has had a direct impact on the indigenous populations who have already presented extremely high levels of mercury in their blood since their main diet is based on fish. Despite knowing that the fish is already contaminated with heavy metals, the villagers are unable to raise enough chickens to change their consumption and are forced to continue consuming fish despite the conditions.
